Dau-Ming Niu

Chairman, Dept. of Pediatrics and Director, Medical Genetics Center, Taipei Veterans General Hospital

Professor Dau-Ming Niu currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Director of the Center for Rare Diseases Research and Treatment at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. He is also a Professor at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. He earned his MD degree from Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan and pursued further studies in medical genetics at Duke University, USA, obtaining his PhD degree from the National Yang-Ming University in Taipei, Taiwan.

Professor Niu specializes in genetic and metabolic diseases, pediatric endocrinology, rare diseases, and molecular medicine. He is actively engaged in clinical research, as demonstrated by the publication of over 200 articles in various peer-reviewed journals. His team is responsible for around 2/3 of newborn screening and diagnosis in Taiwan.

Professor Niu’s team is currently energetically involved in advancing “Precision Medicine” by utilizing whole-genome sequencing and artificial intelligence. They have successfully developed a Rapid Real-Time Analysis System (named Magical Bison) for Whole Genome/Exome Sequencing for clinicians. This system facilitates the rapid diagnosis of genetic diseases and accelerates research in precision medicine. Moreover, the team is currently directing its efforts toward gene therapy, employing an AI-driven platform to design Adeno-Associated Virus (AAV) vectors with enhanced tissue tropism and diminished immunogenicity.
